They are recumbent stones with curved (or hog-backed!) ridge, with outwardly curved sides. This specific Hogback stone can be seen in Govan Old Church, Glasgow and is dated to the 10th century. They often have motifs of interlacing knots and usually large animals or beasties at either end.
